A show about nothing that had everything to say about New York. For nine seasons, Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer made a neighbourhood diner their unofficial office — and that diner was very much a real place.

Tom’s Restaurant at 2880 Broadway, near Columbia University in Morningside Heights, served as the exterior stand-in for the fictional Monk’s Café. While interiors were shot on a Los Angeles soundstage, the red-and-white façade of Tom’s appeared in establishing shots across all 180 episodes.

„No soup for you! Come back, one year!”

The restaurant’s first wave of fame came not from TV but from music: Suzanne Vega’s 1987 song Tom’s Diner was written here. The 1990 DNA remix became one of the most sampled songs in history.

Tom’s has been open since 1940, run continuously by the Catsifas family. The exterior has barely changed — the same red lettering, the same curved façade — which is why fans still arrive daily.

George Costanza’s apartment exterior is at 321 West 90th Street, a short walk south. Jerry’s apartment exterior was filmed at a building on West 81st Street.
